about

Identifying pieces that thrive on the repetition of musical cells was one of the unifying principles behind the choice of repertoire on Recursions. Within this singular idea, these works individually and collectively exemplify the inimitable qualities of the viola's sound world, highlighting its dulcet and melancholic voice while also showing that the instrument is capable of a broad palette of expression. Recurring throughout this recording is also a sense of journey, real or imagined. Pórt Na BPúcaí conjures a fairies' lament originating from the Blasket Islands off the West coast of Ireland, Chahagir sends the listener on a spiritual trek to Armenia, and Rubbra's Meditations travel across time to the Byzantine era. And going beyond a sense of physical place, all of these works (in particular Stravinsky’s ephemeral Élégie) vitally engage the musical imagination as a vehicle to transcend the everyday.

Recursions begins and ends with passacaglias by two great composer/string-performers separated by more than 250 years; Biber and Hindemith. Their examples have inspired Nicholas Cords to draw on his vast experiences as an itinerant musician with two of the most intrepid ensembles of our time to construct his Five Migrations for multi-tracked viola.

I am reticent to describe myself as a composer, but I have a useful store of ideas gathered from years on the road and a lifetime spent with the sound of the viola under my ear. This coupled with the inspirational examples of past and present performer-composers have encouraged me to step into the ring with “Five Migrations’’ – Nicholas Cords
